Starbucks

My friend Megan and I went to Starbucks tonight for a little treat! She asked for some kind of a Iced Chocolate Milk thing for her son Timothy (2.5) and the ladies made one for Caden, too! It's in this adorable little miniature Starbucks cup! Caden, of course, drained the whole thing in about 3 minutes... no surprise there!

Normally this is not something I would have offered Caden, but sometimes there are just special occasions! :) The Korean's don't really do sweets like Americans do. Every time I order the insanely sweet Caramel Machiatto (sp??) I have to ADD sugar to it because they don't make them very sweet at all in Korea! And Caden's little milk, was literally milk and cocoa... not sweet at all, but he liked it! Had to get a picture of my little man drinking his first Starbucks!

Sombrero, etc...

First, let me start by saying I have two things to add to my previous post on words...

First, I forgot that Caden knows sign language for the word, "Up!" We use it to show him how he can tell us he wants out of the crib and high chair. He does it in his car seat sometimes, too! :)

Second, today I think he is trying to say a new word! He has this little toy cell phone John got him. Yesterday, I picked it up and talked in to it....but instead of just "hello!" I had a conversation with the little plastic phone. Caden was intrigued. He was bending down looking at the phone while I was "on" it and after that he became obsessed with that phone and carries it around, putting it up to his forehead and saying his own little version of, "hello." It is hilarious! The funniest part, of course, is that the phone goes to his forehead instead of his ear! And his hello-sounding word really sounds very accurate! I think we may have a new word on our hands...time will tell! Oh, and excuse the ginormous diaper in the video. I had him in a size-to-big-diaper and it's sagging! :)

I'll link a video to the bottom of the blog of him talking on his phone! Or you can click our YouTube Video link on the side of the page to see several other new videos I put up last night. One of them is Caden signing "more" when he means to clap...he gets confused sometimes! :) And then the there is one with him actually clapping when I sing the "If You're Happy and You Know It" song (with NO cues from me to clap or sign...he does them all strictly by word association now).

There is also a video of our new activity: Room Time. I've mentioned before that I'm a Babywise Mom... We have been doing Play Pen Time everyday since he was probably 4 months old. Now that he is more mobile, the playpen time doesn't last as long...we still do it, but only for maybe 15 minutes instead of the 30+ it used to be. Now, he does extended playtime alone in his bedroom. I took some spy video of him playing in there. It's long and probably boring to all of you, but I wanted to document this phase/stage of his life! :)

As for the whole room time/playpen time/etc thing... let me just clarify that they are not all day activities or even back to back...they occur at different set times of the day. Playpen time is in the morning. We wake up, play together, he eats breakfast, then he goes to the playpen so I can eat and shower. We play some more, read books, etc and then it's nap time. After that nap it's the same exact thing except he does room time instead of playpen time after he eats lunch. It's good for our kiddos to know how to play by themselves and believe me, we get plenty of play time together in as well! Just wanted to clarify that! :)

So, after all that you must be wondering just what does the title of this blog have to do with all of that?!? Well, here is the connection... I have a few funny stories about Caden to share.

1) We purchased one of those little tub hats that you put on kid's heads so you can pour water on them and not get it in their eyes. We use it sometimes, but he's used to the water in his eyes now so that hat is more of a toy. You might remember my blog a week or so ago of him with his baseball hat and how proud he was...well this is the same thing in his tub hat that looks somewhat like a sombrero!

2) Today I was slightly distracted and Caden wondered off. Next thing I knew I heard splashing.... he had found the toilet. Gotta love it!

Okay, now for that video. Remember to go check out the other videos, too!

New

Ok, so Caden's new words/sounds/etc need to be documented! Here is the current list at 12 months 3 weeks old.

Words he "says":
mama
dada
uh-oh anytime he drops something
baby (has no clue what it means though)
guck- this one has us stumped. We're trying to figure out if it's just a fun sound or if it means something... our best guess is "duck" but we're starting to think he's saying "book"-
bye-bye (only says it when he wants to)

Words he understands, has an action for, or signs to us:
More
Eat
All done
"That's a no!"
"Can You Say ____" and he'll repeat what you put in the blank or make an attempt at it at least!
Bye Bye
Dance
Head Butt
"Give me five"
clap your hands (he does it with the song.... it's so cute!)

And my favorites... if you growl or make any kind of deep noise, he will mimic you. And if you do a pretend scream (one that would be so high pitched that no sound comes out)...he'll copy that too. :) It looks like he's singing opera. I have to get it on video one of these days.

Sorry for the pictureless post...this one is strictly for the baby book!

Eat and More

Caden is at that amazing age where he will do something new every single day! Yesterday (Wednesday... moving day), my friend Kat watched Caden for us while we dealt with the move. When I picked him up and brought him home to our new place I put him down to let him walk around and explore. After about 10 minutes of watching him "go," I realized that he didn't pull himself up one single time, instead, he stood in the middle of the room. He's been doing this for a few weeks, but not consistently. Actually, I was convinced that he could only do it if he wasn't thinking about it (like when he sees a toy he's excited to get to). So, yesterday marked that milestone as officially met. He's standing up!

Of course every baby has their own cute little way of doing things so I had to document Caden's! He sticks his bottom straight up in the air first, and then up comes the rest of him. I snapped a few pictures...

Today's milestone is that he decided to start signing "eat." Of course, he does it with the "two-finger-touch" that is becoming his signature mark! I took these pictures and video while he was half-way asleep still during breakfast (hence the zoned-out stare).

Moving Day

It's official! We now live in our new apartment on base. The movers (all 7 of them) showed up at about 7:30am on Wednesday morning. They packed and loaded our house by 11:30 and then met us at the new place at 1:00pm. They were gone by 5:00 and our house was (and still is) in shambles!

Our first priority was to get Caden's room squared away so that we could function in it, and also have a safe place for him to play. On Wednesday night, I worked to "baby proof" all the remaining items scattered around the house while John went and cleaned out our old apartment. Today is our first full day in the new place. I still feel really unsettled, but it's coming along one room at a time. I finished unpacking and organizing the kitchen today! One room down! Here are some pictures from moving day!

Lovin My Hat

(The extra pictures are from Caden's 7 month photos.... when he used to wear hats)

Caden used to wear his little winter toboggan all the time, no problem. But around 7 months of age, he reached up one day and realized he could pull it off. Since then, hats have been impossible!

While Nonnie was visiting, we took a little road trip and on the way home she sat in the back seat and played Peekaboo with Caden using a large blanket. Caden quickly caught on to the concept of the game and started holding the blanket up to cover his head/eyes/face and then pull is down again very quickly! This became the beginning of Caden's love of Peekaboo. The video from a few days ago of him walking around with the towel on his head really captures just how much Caden not only tolerates, but now ENJOYS stuff being on his head... all thanks to Peekaboo!

Today John dressed Caden for me while I was running around loading the diaper bag for a morning errand. John saw the baseball cap we've had for months, but have never been able to keep on Caden's head and decided to put it on him. Caden reached up to tear it off, and then stopped..... thought about it for a second.... and then broke out into one of those "I'm so proud of myself" kind of smiles that just melts your heart!!!

Caden kept smiling... and smiling, and began walking in circles in excitement. He loved having that hat on.... well, for a few minutes at least, which is really a pretty good run for a hat in a toddlers world!
Below are some snapshot pictures. In my excitement to capture the moment on film, I didn't realize I was also taking pictures of one more 'blog worthy' thing: Dad put Caden's clothes on backwards.... Gotta love it!

Korean TV Channels

I don't know if this is something unique to Korea, or even just to our particular TV, but it cracks me up that the channels can get into the decimals! You can watch Channel 6, or Channel 6.1. The largest is 115.186!

Just one of those little things I wanted to remember (and document) before we left our current home!

Tour of Switzen

After living in Pyongtaek City, Korea for almost 9 months, we are moving! Not back to the states just yet, but as close to living in America as you can get in an overseas location! We're moving into the Soraksan Apartment Tower on Osan Air Base. Most of my friends have already moved on base, we are one of the last to get orders to move, so we are very excited about the conveniences American (western) style housing has to offer!

We currently live in the newly constructed (4 years old) Switzen Apartments. They are most definitely some of the nicest in town. It looks like a dump from the outside, but they really aren't. No detail was spared when constructing this place. Even the drainage grates are engraved with the apartment name and logo. I've talked about our place on the blog before, but I've finally compiled a video tour for all of you (thanks Lynn for the great idea!) so you can see what it looks like here!

Most of the furniture you see is not ours. The couch and chair, the king sized bed, and all of Caden's nursery furniture and toys are the only things that belong to us (well, and dishes/clothes/etc). The rest of the furniture is loaner furniture. I've done absolutely zero decorating of any kind here. A few of our odds and ends stuff ended up in Korea with us by accident, but other than that there is nothing on the walls except for a calendar and a clock. The walls are concrete and hard (umm... impossible) to nail in to.

Enjoy the tour!

PeekABoo Caden Style

Caden is one busy little man. Who has time to sit still when there is so much to explore!?! Tonight Caden and Dad played a fun little peekaboo game that was too funny not to share!

The Game

And when the game was over, Caden was not too happy his towel was being used to dry dishes

And, a hilarious video capturing the moment

While I'm sharing, today I managed to snap a picture of Caden clapping. It is an old trick that he finally learned the word to! When we start singing "If You're Happy and You Know It," he starts clapping before we get to the "clap" part! It's so cute!

I'm slowly but surely working my way out of the PILE of pictures I hope to post to catch us up on Nonnie's visit and other milestones/happenings... slowly..... I will get there...

A Lesson in Sharing

According to Mrs. Song (a lovely Korean lady who keeps Caden in the nursery on Sunday mornings), Caden was always such a happy and content baby. He would sit and just watch the world go by during the church service. He was easy.
And then.... he started to crawl. Now, he is one of the "big babies" in the nursery. Along with that title comes payback.... payback for all those weeks he sat and watched while the big kids took HIS stuff. Now it's his turn to take things away from all the other little kids. Apparently he gets in "trouble" quite often now days!
It's time for us to start working on sharing. I know he is still a little young, but are they ever too young to start building a solid moral foundation?
Caden's sweet friend, Adeline, joined us at the water park a few weeks ago. Caden had no interest in his little Munchkin Snack Catcher filled with Cheerios and Adeline did. So, we gave the cup to Adeline. Suddenly, the grass became greener on the other side and Caden decided those were HIS Cheerios in HIS cup.... thus the battle began:

It's Mine

No, It's Mine

Give it BACK!

Ha, ha! I won!

Let's try a compromise....

The stare down....

And finally.... sharing

Please take note, it was not my child that finally decided to share. No, it was Adeline's persistence coupled with her recognition that if she just sat there long enough, Caden would eventually drop a few and she would make her move! That's one smart girl! It cracked me up how she just sat, so patiently, waiting. Now, if I could only teach my son that virtue!

In the end, Caden began to share in his own, Indian-Giving kind of way...he put a Cheerio in Adeline's mouth (yep, that's right, he fed it to her!) and then after a second, took it back out and ate it himself.... Oh boy!

Time for a haircut....

Yes, I am from the south, but that does not mean that I am a supporter of rat tails! My little man is starting to grow one...

On another note, I am a mullet supporter, but just for sheer entertainment value.

Well, today has been a sad day for me. My mom left after 3.5 weeks with us here in Korea. The last 6 weeks have been a blur and now that all the company is gone, and I'm lonely...the day seems to have slowed down to turtle speed. The most exciting part of my day was watching Caden figure out his shape-sorter toy. Lately he is just so curious about how his toys work. Enough fiddling with the screws that hold them together.... he's discovering their purpose and he is loving it! He sat for a good 10 minutes today trying to figure out how to get the shapes through the holes. Last night (and again tonight) he started to figure out that if he squeezes the little tub toys they will squirt water. He is one serious boy in the tub now, spending all of his time trying to figure out how to get the toys to squirt. I'm sure the days and weeks ahead will be full of these new little accomplishments!

What do you do....

...when you have $3.00?

Buy 30 pink roses to spruce up your living room! Ah, have I mentioned how much I love the flower market? These little guys were on sale, 10 for 1,000 won which is roughly $1.00.

New Videos

There are several new videos up on our youtube page. Below is a video of Caden signing "more." Click HERE to see more of Caden dancing, playing guitar, and more on our youtube page...

12 Month Milestones

Caden's first birthday has come and gone. Just over a month ago his primary mode of transportation was crawling, but now he walks everywhere. He walks in circles sometimes just because he can. He loves to walk around holding on to a toy (which 'toys' these days consist of things that aren't really toys that I allow him to play with such as cereal boxes, bottle/sippy cup parts, baby food containers, and his favorite...baby spoons. He is even talented enough already (has been for probably 2 weeks or so) to walk WHILE drinking from his sippy cup. I know that running is not too far away! He only did the adorable little Frankenstein walk for about a week and then he got his balance down and no longer needed his arms. I miss the Frankenstein walk. It was the cutest thing! He loves to play chase with Daddy still, but he's walking and playing now instead of crawling. John has been working to teach Caden how to chase him and we think he's finally getting it!

One of the wonderful things you can get in Korea (and other Asian countries) are the "mink" blankets. They aren't really made of mink, but they are so incredibly soft. Imagine the softest baby blanket you've ever felt.... multiply it by 10 and increase the size to a full/queen/king and there you have a mink blanket. I recently purchased the softest one I've felt yet. Unfortunately, each blanket is different in how it feels and in it's color. I had to chose between incredibly soft and doesn't-match-my-house baby blue or matches-the-house but isn't as soft tan. Of course I went with the softer of the two and Caden has fallen in LOVE with this blue mink blanket. He loves to play peekaboo with us under it. We make forts out of it for him to crawl through, and when we lay on the floor under it he crawls back and forth over us (or should I say climbs) because he loves how the blanket feels....squealing all the time in excitement.

Caden is tall enough now to get things off of our kitchen table (he's mastered standing on his toes to reach) and if we leave something on the edge of the kitchen counter... it's on the floor if we aren't watching. Time to turn those pot handles in when we cook!! If he had more things to climb on I think he would be a climber, too. He tries to stand on toys or other objects to make himself taller... especially when trying to escape from his playpen. Nonnie has been teaching him to crawl off the couch backward and he seems to get it, for now. But he can't get up on the couch yet. That is still a ways away!

Caden is really starting to understand language, too. He understands a lot of what we say and can do several things on "command" (sounds like a dog when I word it that way), such as: dance, wave bye-bye, head-butt, and give kisses. He signs more and all-done and he loves to play peek-a-boo both hiding us under blankets and holding a blanket in front of his own face. When we ask, "Caden, can you say ___?," he will TRY to repeat the word to us. If it's too hard then it comes at as "Baaa!" But, he always purses his lips together and pauses as if he's trying to think of the right way to say the word first. If it's dada, naynay, mama, or bye-bye then he will say it. Oh, and his newest word is "Uh-oh!" He copies his Nonnie when she says it.

He is still throwing balls all over the place, but only farther and harder now. And since he has mastered the skill of throwing, he's moved on to objects other than balls. Large toys are a favorite because they make a loud crashing sound. My fear is that he is going to crush his toes throwing something heavy like that one day.... yet another way he keeps me busy watching him all the time. He has no fear. As I type this right now he is walking around the kitchen with a smaller ball working on his one-handed throw (up over his head...and then throw)!

He loves to press buttons on things. One of his favorite toys is his gear-toy. He takes all the gears off and then puts them all back on (which is a great new skill in and of itself) and then presses the button that makes them spin. He also loves to push the buttons on his Learning House and then dance to the music. He loves to put things in boxes, dump truck beds, etc and then take them back out again although this is a newer skill and he isn't doing it on large scales yet...just one item here or there. He likes to crawl while pushing his trucks around (one of the only ways we see him crawl now days). He is also learning how to stack the rings on the.... ring stacker-pyramid toy? What's that thing called anyway?? He loves to carry two objects around and bang them together. While we were getting ready to cook his birthday cake we let him play with the cake pans and he had a good ole' time banging those together. Usually it's smaller objects that he practices that skill on. Oh, and he likes anything that makes loud noises.

He is really starting to enjoy his bath more and more...not that he ever hated it or even didn't like it...he just never got as excited as he does now. He loves to splash the water, he could care less how much of it gets in his eyes. He also loves to "shoot hoops" in his little basketball goal in the bathtub. And he loves to see himself all wrapped up in a towel after his bath. He talks to the baby in the mirror.

Caden likes to surprise us by copying our sounds. Not words, but sounds. For example, John will clear his throat and Caden will make a similar sound to copy him. He also has a high-pitched, airy sounding, squeal that sounds like he is trying to sing. Not sure what to call that sound, almost like a scream without the sound, just air and the occasional little squeak that peeps through. Although it sounds like he's singing when he does that, it's not how he really sings. When John plays the guitar or he hears music he will often start with "aye-aye, aye-aye, aye-aye" over and over and over. We think he is singing when he does this because he does it consistently when he hears music/singing. He also loves to strum the guitar with Daddy.

Another favorite 'toy' right now would be a mirror. He loves to smile and laugh at himself. We have a big mirror in the car so we can see him, but he can also see himself in it and sometimes he really gets going just laughing at himself. He also will do a lovely fake cry (scrunched up nose and mouth with a smile behind it saying "eeeeeeeeeh"- which is my attempt to turn his sound into a 'word'). If he hears another baby crying he will start to smile, then scrunch up his nose, and then proceed to do the fake cry. It cracks us up!

So, what are the things Caden doesn't like? Well, honestly there aren't many. He doesn't like a diaper change if it interferes with something he is "working" on, but usually he is good about letting me change him. He doesn't like to be barricaded in a room. It's okay for the baby gate to be up as long as we are in the same section he is in, but if we move to another room and the baby gate keeps him from getting in there, he will fuss and fuss. These days if he fusses, he says "Mama, Mama, Mama" over and over and over until he is rescued. It's endearing now, but I know it won't be that way much longer.

He still isn't saying Dada to John, but he babbles and copies the word. I find it kind of funny because most babies say Dada first. He says Mama to me, but really only when he is fussing. Not to make him sound like a fussy baby because he isn't, but there are a few things that set him off. The baby gates being one of them. Also, when he is hungry or wants his sippy and I'm trying to clean/fill it he will cling to my legs or follow me around fussing, "Mama, Mama, Mama." He also fusses if he is tired/cranky and he knows we are fixing to leave. He doesn't really have separation anxiety, but he starts fussing (always, "Mama") when we show signs of leaving him when he isn't preoccupied with a toy or is clingy/tired/etc.

Oh, and speaking of clingy... my sweet little man is letting me rock/cuddle with him on occasion now. Not often, but sometimes when we're doing his nap/bedtime routine he will let me rock him while he rests his head on my shoulder. It doesn't last long. The second he's ready to go to bed, he starts squirming for his crib... which is a blessing, too. He knows how to put himself to sleep, and he prefers to do it that way. While I rock him I sing to him. When he was about 4 months old I was putting him down one day and had him swaddled tightly. I was doing the usual 'bouncy ball' thing to lull him to sleep/drowsy and I was in our lovely "world wallpaper" room at our home here in Korea. Looking at all the maps of the world I started singing "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" as I bounced. I sang it slowly, and rhythmically to the bouncing and it stuck! It's now Caden's little lullaby song. If I sing something else I sing "You are My Sunshine."

Caden is still on two naps a day. We go through phases when I think he's going to drop one because they get shorter and shorter, but then he will surprise me and snap right back to two, two-hour naps per day. He can do one nap a day, but usually I reserve those for special occasions when we are traveling or something. Tuesdays and Sundays he only gets one nap because of Bible Study and Church. Most other days he gets two. His bedtime routine is the same: read books, turn off light, sing and rock for a minute or two, then down he goes. His naps vary from 1 to 2 hours. At night he goes down around 7 or 7:30 (or earlier if he's really showing signs of being tired, usually on a one-nap day) and sleeps until around 6:30am. He hasn't made it sleeping until 7am in a while. But, I can't complain about 11-11.5 hours of sleep!

When he turned a year old I switched him from formula to whole milk. I thought I might have issues with the switch but I didn't. I was planning on a week or two long weaning process, but instead it took about a day! The first bottle I did was 4 oz formula and 2 oz milk, then the second bottle was 3 oz of each, then I just went all whole milk to see what he did and he took it! He could care less what it tastes like I guess! Over the next day or two I heated them less and less. Then I dropped the mid-morning (11am) and afternoon (3pm) bottles and offered sippy cups of ice-cold milk instead. He didn't really like it in the sippy cup at first, but took a sip here and there. Then I changed cups (using a brand new, totally different type to distinguish between milk and water) and he took right to it. After a day I dropped the nighttime bottle, but I'm still holding on to the morning one until I feel he has totally mastered the sippy and is getting enough fluids. He actually prefers milk in it now to water. Once he is drinking at least two full sippy cups per day (we are down to about 1.5 right now) I will replace the morning bottle with a sippy cup, too. Probably by the end of the week we will be 100% bottle weaned! Yay! I can't wait to have the space back in my kitchen!

Caden can drink through a straw now, too. Thanks to his two grandmas! Grammy introduced it to him first with a chocolate milkshake. Then a week later Nonnie introduced it with a homemade Baskin Robbins Cappuccino Blast. Now, anytime he sees a straw he wants some of his own. We have some straw sippy cups by Nuby we really like, but he prefers to do it the big-boy way. Chili's has these great kids cups with lids and a straw that we have been collecting! Oh, and Caden loves to eat ice cream. Nonnie spoils him when she gets ice cream. She either shares with him or buys him his own.

Now that he knows how good "adult" food is, that is all he wants. He still eats his baby food like a champ, but if we have something, he wants some of it, too. I am not really sure when or how he figured this one out, but if we are eating anything at all he is at our legs, "dancing" and fussing and begging for some of his own. And it usually works.

A typical day for Caden looks like this:
6:45- out of bed, bottle of whole milk 6oz, then diaper change and playtime
7:30am- breakfast (yobaby yogurt, and oatmeal made with a stage 2 applesauce soon to be replaced by jarred applesauce)
7:45am- playpen time (a challenge right now but we are sticking to our guns on it)
After playpen time he plays until about 8:45, then we start his nap routine and put him down.
9:00-11:00ish- morning nap
11:00- lunch (stage two green veggie, stage two fruit, and a jar of meat and gravy and a sippy of whole milk)
11:00-1:00- play around the house, run errands, etc... varies from day to day
1:00-3:00ish- afternoon nap
3:00- sippy cup of milk and a snack (sometimes offered in the stroller a little later if we are out)
3:00-6:00- play and run errands, eat his snack
5:45 or 6:00 is dinner time- Either a Gerber graduates meal or something I made for him and a stage two yellow veggie, and a sippy cup of whole milk
6:30- bath time/books/rock and sing/ bed at 7pm-ish.

We let him have a sippy cup of water throughout the day, but like I said, he prefers milk right now. We also replace some of the baby food veggies and fruits with real fruits and veggies but only if we have them on hand. He really likes Mandarin oranges, watermelon, peas, and carrots. Other favorite foods are toast with a little tiny bit of grape jelly. We also have a Munchkin Snack Catcher (like a Snack Trap cup) and he loves to eat Cheerios out of it. We've also found that he really likes limes. We discovered this in a desperate attempt to get him to stop begging for our food at Chili's.

I can't remember if I ever mentioned this on the blog before but about two months ago he cut his bottom two teeth. His top two are coming in soon! He's growing up, too fast! Everyday he does something new and cute. It's impossible to capture and record it all but this is my attempt at documenting his latest and greatest milestones. More (lots more) to come in the days and weeks ahead....

The Birthday Cake Pictures

While I was still pregnant I thought of a list of all the different photography ideas I had for my own son. Some I have already done, and others will come in the years ahead. The one I have been looking forward to the most for the last year is the Birthday Cake Pictures. I don't remember how this idea came about. I've seen other photographers do similar things, but I tried to make it my own, and I feel I accomplished that with the two tier cake and the party hat. I love how the photographs really captured the moment.

We actually did the pictures at the birthday party. It was the last thing we did after the presents and the cupcakes everyone else got to eat. We set it all up and made a barricade with the couch and playpen so the other babies couldn't come "help."

Thanks to my mom who helped this all come together. And then my mom and John helped me figure out how to get the best possible lighting in a situation with practically no natural light and no studio lights (can't WAIT to live in America for that one). It was a joint effort.

Here are my favorites.... enjoy!

Caden Turns One

I can't believe it has been a year already. I was sitting in Sunday School, watching a video series on parenting (Shepherding a Child's Heart) when I glanced at the clock and realized that by Huntsville, AL time, my sweet baby boy was officially one year old.

I have day dreamed a lot recently, trying to remember all the little details about the day Caden was born, the emotions I felt, how incredibly wonderful he was... trying to remember it all so that I never forget. My favorite part of that whole day was when John and I, along with my L&D nurse and dear friend Laura Beth, crowded around Caden and read Psalm 91 to him and prayed for the wonderful life that lays ahead of him.

Caden is such a wonderful and happy little boy. He makes us smile and laugh often with his spirited little personality and his funny little 'quirks.' We love the noises and faces he makes. He "sings" when John plays the guitar or when he hears music, he can dance, and wave, he's starting to do some sign language, he is walking, throwing balls, pushing things around the house, or carrying things around the house, making a mess for mom to clean up and just all around keeping us busy! I love to watch him learn and explore. When he learns something new he is so proud and just smiles at us and does it over and over again. He is such a joy.

On his actual birthday (July 5th) we went to the zoo. Here are some pictures. Below is our KFC picnic in the parking lot and a close-up of "Chicken Nuggets" Korean style from KFC....

Two days later we threw a little cow-themed birthday party for him.

Doing the Toljabee, which is a traditional first birthday game where the baby is presented with different items representing different things to "predict" his future. We a combination of the more traditional item (spool of thread, money, pencil) and our own.

ball: athlete
spool of thread: long life
pencil: scholar
money: wealthy
cd: musician
What did he chose???....

the ball AND spool of thread (note: they are both round... Surprised??)
