Birthday Surprise!

For my birthday (Sat, Nov 22) my husband arranged a surprise getaway! He even went as far as to arrange for someone to watch Caden for us while we stayed the night in Seoul! God bless you Fisher family for watching our little man for us! I hope you get caught up on sleep after your unusually early wake up hour today!
I spoke with John on Wednesday while he was in the field and he told me that he had booked a hotel, arranged for a sitter, and planned a weekend away for us, BUT because of his time in the field he just couldn't get to the list (yes, he actually wrote a list) of all the things that needed to be packed and prepared for Caden's overnight stay with our friends. So, I got everyone packed and on Saturday morning we dropped Caden off, grabbed some lunch, and headed up to Seoul.
We made a brief stop at the Chosen Gift Shop at Yongsan. I've, sadly never visited the Chosen (or is it Chosun??) and I've lived here over a year. It's a store at Yongsan (the "army base" in Seoul that is about an hour from where we live) that sells items from other nearby countries such as Thailand, China, and Japan. I apparently really like the Thai decorating style...

John had made reservations at the Hyatt. We'd been told this hotel is amazing and beautiful, and it was except for the fact that for some reason they put us in the un-renovated rooms. John paid over double what we would have paid to stay in the very nice Dragon Hill Lodge (on Yongsan... the Army base nearby). Although the Dragon Hill is not a luxury hotel by any means, it was several steps above what they were trying to give us at the Hyatt. Needless to say for the amount of money he was going to spend at the Hyatt, he was not satisfied with the room, especially after he'd researched it online and the room was spacious and contemporary with a nice big plasma TV, etc. The room we got was very old and dated, musty smelling and the TV was maybe a 13 inch, and not plasma, flat screen, or anything of the like. So, we called the trusty old Dragon Hill and made a reservation. We checked out of the Hyatt, but not before touring a newly renovated room in their attempt to get us to stay... but the sour taste was already in our mouth and besides, we'd save a good bit of money if we left anyway.
John on the phone trying to make a reservation for us to move to another hotel...

After checking in to our hotel room (for good this time), we headed off to dinner. It was my choice between two Italian places (Agio's and Sortino's... one in Itaewon, the other in Insadong... both restaurants I'd visited on the Women's Retreat last month). I chose Sortino's because of their pizza and for the time factor involved in getting there. On the walk up to Sortino's we window shopped through Itaewon and John let me buy a scarf and gloves. Dinner was fabulous and we totally splurged on wines and dessert! It was wonderful!
Dinner at Sortino's
After dinner we walked to Starbucks for a little coffee (to keep us up late for the coming show... we usually are in bed by 10 at the latest and aren't used to late nights so we needed the caffeine)! After the Starbucks we decided to save $20 from the long cab ride and kill time by taking the subway to the show instead. John had bought us tickets to see "Jump!"
Jump was fabulous and I highly recommend it to all my friends here in Korea (you will need reservations as seating is limited... oh, and I wouldn't recommend kids for it unless they are older... it can be for kids, but it's more for adults)! I think the show visits New York and a few other select cities every year or two as well. It is a martial arts show. I know that doesn't sound that exciting, but it is! Do you remember watching cartoon's as a kid (ahem, or grown up for those big kids still out there)? Do you remember the ones where they literally wouldn't utter a single word, but you were captivated and could follow the story completely even without the characters speaking? That is very much how Jump is! There is very little speaking, and the few words spoken are in English.

It is the story of a family: grandfather, mom, dad, the drunken and crazy uncle, the granddaughter, and her suitor who comes to visit the family...oh, and two burglars in the final scene. In Korea it is not uncommon at all for extended families like that to all live together so the story is supposed to be of a typical Korean family, but still not so typical. They get in to all kinds of funny predicaments and arguments and it is just so stinking funny and very action packed. The sound effects are great, too! At one point they get an audience member to come on stage and duel the crazy, drunken uncle...well guess who got picked? JOHN!! And he was so good! He totally played along and was so much fun to watch! I wish I could have taken pictures, but they are very strict about it at the theater... they even made us spit out our gum!
We posed like the Koreans (always posing with peace signs) outside of the Theater.
John with the crazy drunken uncle he got to "beat up" on stage.

After Jump, we walked back to the subway stop and saw a street vendor who had been selling food washing out her cook top in the nasty, dirty, street drain! Nice!!!
Word of warning to those of you who enjoy the occasional street vendor food... they very well may clean their equipment in the street as well!
I told John I'd post these funny pictures, but these three are just a small sampling of the many we took on the subway ride! John just could NOT look normal in the pictures no matter how hard he tried. We laughed and laughed trying to figure out what he needed to do differently to look, well.... normal! :) Not that the pictures are that great of me, but he just looks hilarious!
We had such a good time and (again) I highly recommend this show! The next morning we did some shopping down in Itaewon before heading home. My dear husband gets huge brownie points for this wonderful, surprise birthday weekend! It also marks the first time that we've both been away from Caden at the same time.... and we're doing it again soon as we travel to China!
A quick shopping trip before heading home.

A sign John thought was funny, it says "Ladies and Mans Big Size."

I guess it's not really a very polite way of wording it, huh? In Korea if you go shopping they will just flat out tell you (even if you're like a size 8) "No biggie sizes." Or "You too fat." Fortunately this has never happened to me because it would scar me for life!

A week in review

Last week was very busy for us! I thought I'd do a quick recap in pictures...

Caden says goodbye to Daddy as he heads to the field for the last time!

Caden loves laundry baskets. He loves to push them around the house, put laundry (or other items) in them and then take it all back out, climb in them himself, and stack them on top of each other. Here he had every basket we own out to play with while I sorted through the GIANT pile of clean clothes (don't forget to notice the towels in the foreground).

Laundry literally took up an entire day this week! Especially when Caden decided to 'help' by taking all the sorted clothes back out of the baskets... He does love to help with laundry. He especially likes putting clothes in and taking them out of the dryer.

Anything he can climb on he will...
I know you can't really tell, but he's sitting on the face of the lion push toy...

How he got up there and is staying on I have no idea! I'm sure it involved standing on the seat of the lion in some way... he loves to do that.
Notice, also, what he's holding on to... yes the oven is a hot commodity at our house right now. This week I was slicing an orange for Caden, turned to look at him behind me and found him climbing IN the oven... he'd pulled down the door, climbed on top of it and had half his body inside clinging to the metal racks!
Nice!!
Oh, and you've got to love that these ovens don't have locks on them unless you're cleaning it...

Here he is playing with his friends Trevor and Parker! I couldn't have posed this picture if I had wanted to! Caden climbed in, Parker decided to climb on the back and hitch a ride, and then Trevor thought he'd join the fun, too! Aren't they cute!

The pantry can be so much fun! Here Caden is being creative and playing "blocks" with some wheat thins, spaghetti sauce, and peanut butter...

I hope you all had a good week!

In preparation for our upcoming trip to China I got on the hotel website to see what amenities they have to help me determine what I need to pack...

Ring Around the Rosies

I actually have no idea how long he's known to do this because I've never thought to teach him this 'game.' He definitely learned this one at the CDC.

I was in the kitchen making breakfast when Caden started to spin in circles, crouch down and yell a very long 'word' that started with a D. It didn't take me long to figure out he might be doing Ring Around the Rosies... so I started to sing the song, and he knew exactly what to do! After a few rounds I got out the camera.... he was not as interested in playing by that time, but I managed to get him to do it one more time, sort of.

I've been tagged

I've been tagged by my friend Kristi to do the following:
1) Choose the 4th picture folder on my computer
2) Choose the 4th picture
3) Explain the picture
4) Tag 4 other people
I have no idea what the gooey white stuff around his mouth is, but I can tell you that Caden was 9 months old here! In the previous picture (picture #3) he has his paci in his mouth... I apparently thought he looked cute sleeping there (and doesn't he?!?!) so I took a picture of him...

I'm going to cheat and show you the much cuter picture of him sleeping in the car... the not so close up one where you can't see the gooey white stuff! I mean, what WAS I feeding him?!? It looks like he just ate a cupcake with white icing! Who knows...

And I can't help but notice his shoeless feet! I had forgotten about the days he never wore shoes... they just simply weren't necessary! It wasn't long after this picture was taken though that shoes became an essential part of his wardrobe! He's still rear facing in his car seat here too, I miss those baby days! My boy is growing up! And that is our old car seat that I honestly do not miss at all! Thank you Nonnie for bringing us our Britax this summer!! :)

So, I tag:

An Asian Keepsake

We weren't in Korea long before I told John I'd like to get a piece of Korean furniture to have as a sort of souvenir. So, we saved up for it and last weekend we went out to a big antique furniture warehouse/store called Kojeon to see if we could find anything we liked! Turns out I'm not a very big fan of Korean furniture... it's just a little too Asian, leaning toward Gothic in style... But, I fell in love with the pieces from the area of Tibet.

We had a set budget and a "we will not go over this amount no matter what" limit for our shopping and sadly, my favorite piece was $250 over that amount. So, I strolled around the shop and finally told John that I'd rather leave there empty handed than with a very expensive piece of furniture that I settled for because the one I really loved was too much... We were ready to leave the store and try another place to see if we had better luck when John decided to see just how much he could talk the guy down.... Turns out we our favorite piece for $15 LESS than our set limit!

Here is a picture of part of the store

Here are some pictures of some of the furniture we saw

An antique Korean bed... they sleep on this with mats and blankets

A crazy, fancy bed from some other Asian country, not Korean though as far as I know...

I love these little chests with all he drawers.
This one was 1,600,000 won, or about $1400..

Not sure what this is, but my best guess is it is some kind of old school high chair!
Anyone out there have any ideas as to what this is??

And finally, the piece we bought already
in our entry way at our apartment, complete with my diaper bag on top of it! :)
This is a clothes chest/dresser of some sort that is from a region that starts with a "C" that
I can't remember that is near Tibet. The chest is over 100 years old.
This picture just does not do it justice in my opinion...

One year ago...

This was my second week in Korea one year ago! Yes, November 4th marked the anniversary of our arrival in Korea last year! It's so hard to believe it's been a year already! I was sending out "Update Letters" (here and here) at first, but I decided to start blogging more regularly instead. So, for those of you who've been wondering about us and what we've been up to for the past year you can find out by searching through our blog archives!

When we first came to Korea we were living in an off-base Korean high rise. We loved our apartment, but we finally got orders to move on base in July. I think we moved in around July 24th, which was a welcome relief to us after paying for the summer A/C in the Korea place. It was a significant downsize for us to move on base (from a 3-4 bedroom to a 2 bedroom), but it's just so much more convenient! We love our new apartment, too!

So, the big news we have to share at this time is that if all goes as planned, we will be separating from the Army and returning to Huntsville in the Jan/Feb time frame. This means that we will be trying to find a job in Huntsville, maybe buy our first home, and stay put for a long, long time! No more military moves every 1 to 2 years! We are really excited about this big step, but also very nervous to be leaving a lifestyle that we've really come to love and enjoy. There is a lot about the military that we will greatly miss!

Most of you have heard this news by word of mouth, but for those who have not heard yet we thought it was time to announce it! As our tour here in Korea comes to an end in just a few months, we've been busy trying to take in as much of Korea/Asia as we can before we leave. We've got China and Thailand trips planned in the near future, we bought some Asian furniture as a keepsake, and I'm busy making lists of all the things I still want to do before we leave!

Our time in Korea is not over yet, and I'm glad because I'm not quite ready to say goodbye right now. Maybe in a few months I'll be ready, but I know I won't leave this country without shedding a few tears. It's been a great experience living here! Stay tuned to our blog to see how we spend our remaining time in Korea!!

16 Months

I can't believe my baby boy is 16 months already. This last month flew by particularly fast! Maybe it's because we've just been so busy!

On the talking front we've made a LOT of progress this month. Caden is picking up signs and words everyday! Here is my best attempt to remember them...

Signs: help, eat, sleep, more, milk, water, all done, dog, bird, fish, ball, all done, up, shoe, please, thank you, bath (well, actually he signs clothes but he says bath when he does it... he's confused).
Words: eat (deet), bath (bap or bapbap), baby (beebee), help (bop- we know it's help because he does it with the sign), dog (gog sometimes dog), hello (ah oh), hi (hi), uhoh (uhoh), ears (eyes), nose (nnnna), no (also nnnna, but more of a command- not our favorite word for obvious reasons), ball (baawl- what a southern accent!), water (wawawawa -does this while attempting to sign water), and a few others that we haven't quite deciphered yet but we think might be truck, more, book, and thank you. He tries to copy a lot of what we say, but these are the words he uses without us having to say it first.

Caden started the baby jargoning this month. It's so funny to watch him try and have a conversation in complete gibberish. Here is a video of him talking to me in the tub.

Caden is understanding more of what we say these days, too! For example, we taught him the word and sign for 'sit.' He doesn't sign it to us yet, but when we sign it or say it, he complies (most of the time). We had to teach this one when he learned to climb up on the couch. He loves to climb on stuff so we really have to watch him now!

He has a lot of favorite toys right now. I would have to say his first love would be things that 'go' such as trucks, trains, and cars. Next would be his toy cell phones (we even gave him a real cell phone that we don't use anymore). He will walk around talking into those for a long time. Those are especially useful for long stroller outings as well! He also loves any kind of object that he can take out of or put into a container. He's become quite fond of his books again and loves to read them to himself. Sometimes he will sit still long enough for us to read them to him... it depends on his mood at the time! He still loves blocks, although they don't hold his attention for quite as long these days. He's still obsessed with his gear toy, especially since we put all the gears in a little container. He likes to take them out one by one and put them on the gear toy, watch them spin, and then put them back in the box one by one. Caden's also become a big fan of arts and crafts. He loves to color, but we still have major issues with eating the crayons!

His favorite toys of all though are the things he's not supposed to have that he manages to get his hands on. He loves to turn over the diaper bag or purse and find my keys, wallet, and cell phone. And he knows exactly what to do with each of them. He takes all the cards out of the wallet and then puts them all back in, he takes my keys to the front door and tries to figure out where they go and what they do, and he puts the cell phone to his head and pretends to talk to some one.

Recently I lost my wallet. I was about to call and report it missing when I found it stashed in the storage compartment on Caden's Tonka Truck (...again Grammy, this toy is killing me! It has so many uses!).

Caden is starting to love music. Sometimes he tries to sing in a really high pitched sweet voice. Usually he does this when he is pretending to read a book. He also tries to sing along to the ABC song (with the magnetic fridge letters). He also sings some of the Wheels on the Bus song with his DVD. He goes Bump, Bump, Bump... Beep, Beep, Beep... and Whaa, Whaa, Whaa with the people, horn, and babies on the bus!

Caden is learning how to play like a boy thanks to Daddy. John's been wrestling and rough housing with him. When Caden see's Dad he starts running around like a maniac child that has been trapped in a stroller all day (which is has not, but he acts like it)! He loves to play chase, or to run circles around the house.

As far as discipline goes, he's really testing his limits these days. He wants what he can't have and needs to check in every few hours just to see if it's still off-limits. When we tell him no, he's usually obedient, but we have to catch him and say "that's a no" before he gets to the item. Once his hand is on it, it's hard for him to let go.

Caden still sleeps 11-12 hours at night. We've started having very short 1 hour naps though. Not every day, but several days a week he just won't nap more than an hour. It's not long enough because even out of the crib he cries and cries and cries. It seems putting him in the stroller and walking to the store or just walking to walk are the best ways to calm him down. If he takes a good nap, he wakes up happy and ready to play. I'm sure you all read the post from last week when I decided to let him cry to see if he'd nap longer and he jumped/fell/climbed/etc out of the crib. Not so fun!

I know I say it every time I type one of these, but he is SO MUCH FUN right now. I love being his Mommy more than anything else I do! And speaking of.... he's up from his nap now so it's time for me to go do just that: be his Mommy!

The Zoo

Several ladies from my MOPS Group (Mother's of Preschoolers) carpooled to the nearby Seoul Grand Park Zoo last week. This was Caden's second trip to the zoo. Our first trip wasn't as much fun, partly because of the rain. Last week's trip was awesome! It was a gorgeous fall day! The leaves were all changing at the zoo and everything was so pretty!

Eating Lunch... soggy grilled cheese.
Yum!

These rocks were Caden's favorite part of the whole trip.
He thought they were blocks and tried to stack them.
See the JOEY in it's mama's belly pouch!

Bulgogi House Birthday

For my friend Whitney's birthday a group of us all went out to eat at a Korean Bulgogi House. I am ashamed to admit that I've lived in Korea for a year now and have not done this. It was a very unique experience and I'm very glad to say that I've done it!

When you arrive at the restaurant you take off your shoes and then sit on floor pillows at a low table. You chose your order off the menu and then they bring hot coals to a little sunken dish in the table and cook your dinner on it! For Whitney's birthday we all decided to order Bulgogi so instead of using the coals they cooked the large order on a burner in the middle of the table. Still, a cool experience. We also ordered an appetizer of Yakki Mandu (I have no idea how to spell this one, so it's my best guess).
While the bulgogi meat cooks they bring you pickled stuff galore to munch on while you eat. I have no idea what most of it is called. It's all cold and in my opinion would have been better had it been warm. My friends said that some places serve these side dishes warm, others cold... it just varies. The Leek Pancakes were quite tasty, but the rest of it I could live without eating again.

Once the meat is cooked, you place it on a leaf of lettuce with some rice, roll it up and eat it! Bulgogi is so yummy! It's very thinly sliced meat marinated in a sweet sauce that reminds me of terriyaki and it's cooked with onions, these weird 'see through' noodles, and other vegetables.

Here is a picture of our aftermath... you can see the tables with the silver bucket for the hot coals a little better in this picture. This restaurant also has western style tables and chairs for those who don't want to eat on the floor, but in my opinion if you're going to eat Korean fare, eat it like a Korean!!

It was such a fun night and I'm glad I got to share this experience with some of my friends here in Korea!
Happy Birthday Whitney!

Car Wash Coupon

Today we took the car down to the Auto Center here on base. You can vacuum your car out, go through the car wash, and even service your own car in the do-it-yourself auto crafts building.

So, today we cleaned out the car, vacuumed it, and drove around to the car wash. There was a line so while we were killing time waiting for our turn John comes up with this idea to write his own coupon and try to convince Ajossi (the name for a Korean man) that he should get his car washed for free.

Would you fall for this?!?

I mean, LOOK at this coupon!
It's completely hand written, on a scrap piece of paper.

Well, poor Ajossi was quite confused. I'm surprised my snickering didn't give it away. I couldn't believe John was really going to go through with it! I couldn't stop laughing!
Ajossi ran into the building to get his boss to translate. Of course the boss was outraged at the coupon (notice it says it was 'from' the Auto Center) and came running out demanding to know where John had gotten this coupon (He was followed by the secretary would couldn't stop laughing).

In the end they thought it was a pretty funny prank. I'm just glad they thought it was funny! I kept telling John they were going to call the police on him!

Head, Ears, and Nose

Caden knows some body parts!

Bathtime Bootie!

After changing Caden's diaper and half way undressing him I told him it was time for his bath! He started running down the hallway toward the bathtub doing some kind of strange sign language that he thinks means "bath." I think it's from one of his signing videos. They do a song about clothes and "bed clothes" which is the literal sign for PJ's... you sign sleep and then clothes for PJ's. The next verse is about taking a bath (the things you do before you go to bed song)... so I think he's signing clothes and thinking it's bath... funny!

Anyway, enjoy this video of his little naked bootie running toward the bathroom!

It got worse...

As if I wasn't rattled enough from my baby deciding to vacate his crib yesterday... the day continued to bring new surprises... I didn't know at the time that I should have waited to type the post from yesterday.

After the crib incident, I was in the living room dusting and Caden was happily playing in his bedroom. I couldn't see him, but I could hear him and was aware of what he was doing. I pulled out the handy step stool and dusted the top of my entertainment center. As I walked to the trash can to throw away my dust rag I made a mental note to immediately put the stool away.... but somewhere between the stool and the trashcan I forgot about it and ended up in the laundry room.

A few minutes later (still folding laundry) I hear Caden fussing. I ignore him thinking he's frustrated with a toy... Nope. No toy. He's on the step stool and can't get down.

An hour later I walked away again.... and he of course discovers I left the cabinet under the sink unlocked.... I NEVER do that... again it was a time I made a mental note and forgot to go back.... I walked in to find him on the floor with a bottle of Clorox Kitchen Disinfectant Spray... the top loose where he'd been unscrewing it... liquid ALL over the floor, all over him, and potentially some was consumed.... I had to call the ER. This was actually the second time this week Caden had me checking labels on products for poison control information... he ate some deodorant on Sunday.... I dropped the stick. He got it... I thought he couldn't get the lid off.... and next thing I know he's eating some of it.... fun times... I didn't think he ate much and I was late for church so I opted not to call poison control on that one. He's still here so I think he's fine.

Anyway... parenting this little toddler is a lot of fun, but boy he's busy! My mom told me to make sure I'm documenting this stuff...so I had to type it up! Sorry for the picture-less posts!

Baby Overboard

Well, it happened. I knew it was coming....

Caden climbed out of his crib.

Two months ago Caden was taking two, two+ hour naps a day. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere the boy stopped napping. So we switched to one nap a day. We've been struggling to find the perfect time to put him down and he's been struggling with just how long he wants to sleep. At first it was 2-3 hours everyday. Then 2 hours. Then an hour and a half. And now... ONE HOUR. That's it. That's all he wants/needs/etc.

After an hour he wakes up crying/fussing, but I'm starting to think that is just because he knows fussing means he gets out of the crib. So, I've been letting him cry to see if he will go back to sleep. I haven't been consistent about it... every couple of days I try it again and he never (never, ever) goes back to sleep. He will cry for an hour.

Have I thought of rocking him?? Ha! Rocking him doesn't cut it either. If I go in there he will let me rock him for all of about 2 minutes before he's crying and squirming around in my arms trying to get down. We struggle and I end up putting him back in the crib...then the crying turns to wailing.

It's just one of those things that I don't know what to do. Do I just accept that he's only going to nap an hour? I'm okay with that. He doesn't have to nap for 2 or 3 hours... but the thing is after his one hour nap he always, always, always wakes up crying. Again, I can't tell if this is from crankiness because he's still tired or if the crying is just his method of choice for getting me to respond to him and get him out of the crib. I'm really struggling here with what to do....

So, today was one of those "let him cry and see if he falls back to sleep" days. Obviously it didn't work. I heard a giant THUD and walked in his room to see him crawling around on the floor by his crib. I just got off the phone with John and we're looking into purchasing a crib tent. Either this or a video baby monitor, but a video monitor won't keep him in the crib. More than likely we'll get a crib tent....

Sigh...

Not quite right...

Caden tries to ride on the little toy truck

A Halloween Laugh

Caden does his 'crazy-mad-scientist' laugh.

This second video is just a little extra from the same morning. We're trying to get Caden to use his signs for the camera. But, two things... First, Caden always stops performing when the camera comes out (it seems). Second, he usually uses these signs to get something or communicate with us and not as a form of entertainment. His signing vocabulary seems to be increasing weekly and he's starting to say words with the signs. Of course the words might be indistinguishable to people other than his parents! Here he is signing "help" (pronounced bop if he says it) and "please."

Halloween 2008

Halloween this year was very different from Halloween for us last year. Last year this was our last night in Huntsville before we started our journey (VERY early the next morning) to Korea.
This year we decided to attend some Halloween/Fall Parties in place of trick-or-treating. Let's face it, Caden is way to young to understand trick-or-treating and then John and I will end up with a bunch of candy we definitely don't need!

I took Caden to his day care (the CDC) for a little Halloween Party. It was really cute and fun, but all the stuff they had for the kids to play with was messy so I spent most of my time trying to keep him from ruining his costume so early in the afternoon! They had jello with noodles in it for the kids to feel around in, and a big sandbox table with flour in it, play dough, and a water table. They also had cupcakes and juice. The cupcakes were a big hit with Caden. He had two. He wanted three but I decided two was more than enough! Cupcakes are not my first choice of snack for him. I'm more of a rice cakes and raisins kind of mommy.

After the CDC party we went home to eat dinner and meet up with Dad, then headed to the fall festival at church. We hung out there for a bit and let Caden walk around and expend some energy. He loved watching the older children play. He thinks he is one of them and tries to copy what they do soemtimes.

After church we headed back home. We stopped by a neighbors house for one trick-or-treat before heading to bed. All in all it was a fun evening.
